How to save video from Internet Explorer

How to save video from Internet Explorer

Here I am going to share an experience with you, where I was required to get the video file that I was playing in Internet explorer out of Temporary directory and save it to some permanent disk folder.

Note: It is far better if you use video download tools with the web browser.

Internet Explorer Version: 7.0.6xxx
[Open Internet Explorer – Help – About Internet Explorer]

Operating System: Windows Vista

I was not playing file from you tube [I do not see any tmp file while watching video from youtube.]

I found the file in following directory:
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low
[Although the directory is not visible in my computer system, so I directly put it in address bar/location bar in windows explorer.]

File name was fla3870.tmp [May be in your system It will be by different name]

You have to find the video file by trick technique for example:
1.  fla in the above filename. [fla3870.tmp]
2.  If you know the video file size in advance then match it with final size of the tmp [temp] file.
3.  The file size keeps on changing as you do refresh in the temp folder.
4.  You see that file size no longer increase and the indication of buffering in the video has come to the other end.
5.  The creation time of the temp file is near the time when you start watching the video.

!!!Attention Please!!!
Do not forget to copy the temp file to a safe location before closing the web page from where you are watching the video else the temp file get deleted automatically.
So first copy and paste the video/temp file at some other location. Scan it for virus if you wish. Finally close the web browser.
Note: I face problem while coping the file to different location as File is open in another program, but as soon as I close the internet explorer the video temp file goes invisible from the temp directory.

How to play that file
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to the place where you have saved the file from temporary folder.
It is better if you make the copy of that file so that you have a safe original file.
I hope you had made copy of that file. Leave the original one. Rename the copy file as say <movie_name>.flv and play it in a media player.
{You can choose other file extension also depending upon the video format.}
If you get message like file extension change can be a problem, ignore it and press ok (as we have our original file with us intact)
